Doctors

All our Optometrists are members of both the Ontario and Canadian Associations of Optometry and are certified in the treatment and management of ocular disease.

Dr Scott MacKenzie

Originally from Listowel, Ontario, Dr. MacKenzie graduated from the University of Waterloo's School of Optometry in 1977 and received his fellowship to the  American Academy of Optometry in 1981. He comes to his chosen career honestly, his father, Dr. Ken MacKenzie practiced Optometry in Listowel for nearly 40 years and his brother, Dr. Rod MacKenzie has taken over the family practice.

He enjoys being active in the community and is a past president of the Conestogo-Winterbourne Optimist club. An avid sportsman, he is also a past president of the K-W Racquet Club. Those that know him well will tell you his true passions are golf and music. With over 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. MacKenzie has seen many changes in eye care and now with several of the new technologies already implemented in the office he looks forward to this exciting time in our practice.

Dr Joe Heslip

Dr. Heslip graduated with honours in 1996 from the University of Waterloo with Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees.  Invaluable clinical experience in the treatment of ocular disease was gained during his externship at the Eye Institute in New Port Richey, Florida. After graduation he associated with practices in Simcoe and Hamilton before joining Dr MacKenzie in 1997. He has maintained a connection with his academic roots working as a clinician at the University of Waterloo and more recently welcoming students into his office.  He has been the resident Optometrist for Trinity Village Care Center since 1998 and is past president of the Waterloo-Wellington and District Optometric Association.

A native of Kitchener, Dr. Heslip enjoys many outdoor activities with his family.  Skiing, biking and hiking are favourites.  An interest in music persists as he attended Humber College studying composition, arranging and performance.

Dr Mary-Jo Shanahan
Dr. Shanahan decided she wanted to become an optometrist when she was just eight years old, after she was fit with her first pair of glasses. She graduated with honours from the University of Waterloo in 2008 where she received awards for top grade in clinic and patient care in both her third and fourth years of study. After graduation, she worked in a busy practice in downtown Toronto.

Originally from Kitchener, she is thrilled to be back in the KW area working with Drs. MacKenzie and Heslip as well as the current resident optometrist for Trinity Village Care Center. Dr. Shanahan is truly devoted to providing excellent patient care. She is fluent in Spanish and has traveled to Ecuador with an eyecare team to provide services to an impoverished region.

Mary-Jo enjoys spending time with her husband and young son, running, scrapbooking and traveling.
